Volkswagen Polo Overview

Volkswagen Polo was launched in the Indian market back in the year 2010. The Polo marks as the Volkswagen’s first offering in the premium hatch segment in the subcontinent. Volkswagen Polo Design

There is no major change in the design of the polo. It has the same dimensions. The front and the rear bumper of the car has seen some changes. The grill is now shaped differently and features a honeycomb design. The LED tail lamps, as well as the headlamps, see changes in the elements. The shape of the daytime running lights have also changed. The car looks the same from a distance but these are the minor changes that can be seen.

The GT TSI line does not get many changes. The car is identical to the regular polo. The only difference is in the hardware and minor colour changes. It gets an all-black styling and has a sporty feel to it.

Step inside and everything seems familiar here too with some kit which will call for applause like cruise control and rear AC vents while the car continues to lack essentials like keyless entry, push button start and even a reverse parking camera, it does get a nice touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and there are reverse parking sensors too. The car gets artificial leather seats and the piano black finishing in the centre console looks good too. Volkswagen Polo Performance

Volkswagen Polo sources its power from 1.5L diesel and 1.0L petrol engine. The 1.5L 4-cylinder TDI diesel engine which produces 90PS and 230Nm of torque is better than the earlier 3-cylinder engine. The powertrain offers excellent performance and drivability in urban conditions as well as on highways. The 5-speed manual transmission is easy with well-defined gear rations. Power hungry folks can choose the GT TDI model in which the same engine produces 110PS and 250Nm of max torque.

The carmaker has replaced the 1.2L TSI engine with the 1.0L TSI one that makes 75PS and 110Nm of peak torque, paired to 5-speed manual gearbox. Though it’s not as powerful as the competitors, it gives acceptable performance in cities. However, if you choose the GT TSI variant, you will love to drive one of the most performance packed hatchbacks available in the country. The 4-cylinder turbocharged model musters 105PS and 175Nm of torque. And with the 7-speed dual clutch DSG automatic gearbox to assist, the performance is unbeatable in both sifting through cities and zipping through those trucks on highways.

The fuel efficiency figures are fairly impressive in both the diesel and petrol engine powered Polo. Where the 1.5L diesel puts 20.14kmpl in the standard variant, the GTI model reads 19.91kmpl, certified by ARAI. The petrol manual version returns decent 18.78kmpl, the automatic variant delivers respectable 17.21kmpl.

As always, the Volkswagen Polo is brilliant when it comes to ride and handling balance. The ride quality is good, the handling is excellent with great body control and the steering is light at low speeds but weighs up well at higher speeds, being a bit artificial though. The 195 mm tyres offer good grip but this car seems to be overtyred for the power it puts down. The Polo remains stable at speed and the brakes offer surefooted stopping power.

The overall braking action is confidence inspiring. The Volkswagen Group is known to make the best engines in the world, right from that W16 in the Veyron and Chiron to the ones that power Bentleys, Audis and Lamborghinis. This makes me wonder why can’t VW make a decent small capacity NA engine to compete with Maruti Suzuki’s brilliant K12 unit. Not only does the new MPI engine lack excitement, it doesn’t have the performance to match any of its rivals and when the price actually turns out to be more (the Swift costs lesser), you realise if you want to buy a petrol Polo, you are better off spending Rs. 2 lakhs more for the GT TSI.

Volkswagen Polo is available in 4 different variants such as Trendline, Comfortline, Highline and Highline Plus. The price range of the premium hatch is between Rs. 5.54 lakh and Rs. 9.33 lakh. The base variant Trendline is offered at the price tag of Rs. 5.54 lakh for the petrol and Rs. 7.04 lakh for the diesel trim. Its top-spec model Highline Plus is available at the price tag of Rs. 7.37 lakh and Rs. 8.09 lakh for the petrol and diesel variants respectively. The powerful GT variant is priced at Rs. 9.19 lakh for the petrol trim and Rs. 9.33 lakh for the diesel, ex-showroom, New Delhi.

Polo hatchback is currently pitted against Hyundai Elite i20, Maruti Suzuki Baleno and Honda Jazz in the premium hatchback segment. Volkwagen Polo has really struggled to make its strong position in the niche despite immense trust of people in Maruti and Hyundai brands. The competition is really getting intense in the segment and the 2018 Volkswagen Polo might change the game for the carmaker.
