BMW X6 Review & First Drive

BMW X6 Overview

Infused with revisions, the generation BMW X6 SUV gets bigger bragging a relatively macho stance. Although, the wheelbase has been reduced minimally by 2 mm to 1,933 mm which means an insignificantly shorter cabin. Other than the metamorphosed size, X6 gets better styled exteriors and spruced up cabin. Available only in the xDrive40d grade, the M package is offered as standard fare. Cosmetic upgrades on the outside and inside make the SUV look changed for good.BMW has also inset some advanced gadgets inside for the purpose of occupants’ entertainment. Safety wise, this Beemer is a reliable one, courtesy the raft of safety equipments incorporated inside. Mechanical strength is derived from the athletic 3.0 litre, diesel powertrain which outputs healthy power and torque figures. Performance is yet another area to watch out for, the company claimed performance numbers for the SUV are impressive. BMW price in India is placed a little higher, which brings it along the lines of priciest SUVs on offer. BMW X6 Design & Style

Few might find the overall design of the X6 to be a bit odd. While the coupe roofline gives it a nice curvy silhouette, some might think it doesn’t sync too well with the large SUV body. They personally love the way the roofline blends into the integrated spoiler but it kind of eludes practicality; more on that later. But then design is entirely a matter of perspective. That aside, look closely and you simply can’t ignore certain details of the car. To ensure that the front-end looks aggressive and proportionate, BMW has widened and stretched the trademark kidney grille. The sleek twin headlights flanked by the eyebrow LED Daytime Running lights make the 2015 X6 look menacing.

We particularly liked the air-dams incorporated in the front bumper. They channel the wind towards the wheel such that it exits from the vent near the front doors, thereby reducing aerodynamic drag. The rear, although equally sculpted doesn’t look as butch as the front. Discount the badge and you might just mistake it for a beefier version of the 5 Series Gran Turismo.

BMW X6 Cabin & Comfort

Once inside, you witness a cabin which is very typical of a BMW vehicle, with the layout being very common among its sibling. You do however get twin AC vents on the right most and left most side of the dashboard. Cabin quality is almost faultless with fit and finish levels being truly phenomenal. The dashboard gets a dark wood insert while the glovebox is very different, it’s not the usual pull down type and instead there is a button below the AC vent which opens a rather small glove box. However there are plenty of storage bins inside the cabin, including one below the centre arm rest. The instrument cluster is easy to read and you also get a heads-up display which shows the speed in your line of sight. The seats of the BMW X6 are simply fantastic, offering terrific support all around. With the luxury package, one can get special comfort seats which have active seat ventilation, heating and lumbar support. The cabin feels rich in every way and there is plenty of space for four adults. Legroom is good and headroom is decent but a fifth passenger just won’t be able to sit because the sloping roof has cabin lights in the centre, thereby comprising on headroom of the fifth passenger. There is a small storage area on each side of the rear seat. The BMW X6 features a 4-zone climate control and also has an LCD screen for rear seat passengers (placed right behind the front arm rest) which plays multiple video formats including AUX and DVD. The doors which have wood, leather and aluminium on them are heavy but you don’t have to take much effort to close them as they have a suction mechanism which pulls them back into closed position.

The iDrive system shows an array of data, including torque distribution on each wheel. There are quite a few cameras including 360-degree view. Off-road cameras are placed on either side of the front bumper, while three cameras are placed on the roof to show what’s around you. There is a reverse camera as well with directional marking which is important as rear visibility is poor due to the small rear windshield. The multimedia system has navigation which is quite accurate. Right below the audio system are buttons for the cameras, traction control, boot opening, etc. The boot opens electronically and shuts down with a touch of a button. There is a charging port inside the boot, probably to power your portable refrigerator. There is good amount of boot space but the sloping roof does compromise on the trunk’s carrying capacity to a certain extent.

BMW X6 Engine & Gearbox

The 2017 X6 that is on sale in India is the fully loaded M Sport model. It gets a 3.0-litre inline 6-cylinder diesel unit that is churns 318PS and an impressive 630Nm. All of this power is sent out to all four wheels with the help of an 8-speed automatic transmission. Now that we have the facts out of the way, let’s get on with the feel.Dig your right foot deep and the car is brisk to get off the line accompanied by the sweet grunt from the engine. It revs up smoothly right up till the 5,500rpm redline and on its way there touches the 100kmph marker in a claimed figure of just 5.8 seconds. Aided by the slick gearbox, the engine is quick to respond to inputs. On the highway, there is ample of power to comfortably cruise at three digit figures with enough punch to spare for those quick overtaking manoeuvres. In terms of frugality, this large sized beast isn’t very good, that said the mileage numbers are insignificant.

BMW X6 Ride & Handling

BMW’s are known to be driving machines, the X6’s weight tries to make an exception here. With significant amount of weight under its belly, the X6’s heaviness is felt at high speeds and it has quite a bit of body roll. The vehicle gets bouncy on bad roads and the run flat tyres really don’t help matters much. Surprisingly this BMW has a space saver spare wheel but still BMW has opted for run flat tyres, which do end up spoiling the ride quality to a certain extent. The vehicle is on the stiffer side but still glides on good roads, only to be unsettled on large bumps. BMW doesn’t offer mode selection on this variant of the X6 and you can’t choose between Comfort or Sport, surprising.

High speed stability is excellent and although it’s not as sharp as other BMWs, its still much ahead of its key rivals (from the SUV segment). The steering is a delight and has immense feel and feedback. It isn’t much heavy at low speeds but as you go faster, the steering simply comes into its own, offering a very tactile feel to the drive. Brakes are very sure footed and have terrific stopping power, with the pedal feel being extremely positive. The X6 has good off-road ability and can easily traverse most terrains, thereby offering an splendid balance of good on and off-road driving.

BMW X6 SAfety & Security

The 2017 X6 comes heavily loaded with features. From Head-Up Display, night vision with dynamic light spot, 360 degree camera to parking assist, the X6 has it all. In terms of safety, the X6 gets 6 airbags, ABS, EBD and all other abbreviations you can think of. It also gets Lane departure warning and pedestrian alert. For the passengers at the back there are two separate HD 9.2-inch monitors with separate DVD drives to view different films on. Talking about movies and sound, the 2015 BMW X6 also comes with a 16 speaker Bang and Olufsen high end surround sound system.

The centre console gets a 10.25-inch screen below which is the dual zone climate control and the controls for the integrated Bang and Olufsen infotainment system. Aside from the media and navigation, the screen also displays vehicle information and settings too. All the buttons are soft touch and well within reach. And then there is the automatic tailgate operation. If you hands are full after a shopping spree, a quick wave of the foot under the rear bumper opens up the tailgate.

BMW X6 Conclusion

The BMW X6 might loose out on headroom and boot space against the X5, but it offers an unparalleled level of desirability. While it sure is expensive, it’s a very different and unique body style which is attracting many people to the vehicle. The X6 has carved out such a niche that others are now following with their own offerings (Mercedes and Audi). If you want an SUV which drives well, performs brilliantly and looks out of this world, then the BMW X6 is your only choice today.
