Audi A4 Overview
Audi launched the A4 last year with much fan-fare. At that time, it only came in a petrol variant, but now they have also introduced a diesel variant and these are our first impressions of the new variant. Although we are quite familiar with the petrol A4, we shall still take you through the basics of what it’s all about. This iteration of the A4 is underpinned by the MLBevo platform that uses aluminium and magnesium in key areas to increase body rigidity and yet keep the weight down. As a result, despite being dimensionally bigger than the older car, the new A4 is 95kg lighter, but the diesel version absurdly weighs a massive 190kg more than the petrol A4. Check for SBI car loan.
Audi A4 Exterior & Style
We were very fortunate to get the premium S line version for our review. On any other day, I would have chosen the Brilliant Red because it is the trademark S4 colour and it simply looks brilliant but then the Scuba Blue is not bad at all. In fact, the colour does the make the car look very ravishing. The front face of the A4 looks angry and aggressive. The angular lines above the headlight meet the trademark radiator grille. The grille is finished with a chrome surround and is very prominent and bold in nature. Since this was the S Line, it gets fancy body work too for example the lower air splitter under the front bumper looks very sporty. Even the fog laps now sport an angular design.
It gets option Xenon lights with daytime running light strip. The bonnet appears stretched and flows subtly to the radiator grille. The detailing done on the front bumper like the chrome linings make it look very neat. Even the redesigned side air inlets look sporty. The silhouette looks very balanced with equal proportions everywhere. The stretched bonnet line clubbed with the constant shoulder line make the A4 look like a mini limousine. Adding a dash of sportiness is the 16″ cast aluminium alloy wheels with 5 spoke design. The ORVMs are equipped with turn indicators. It also gets a very prominent running board on the side.
See it from rear and it draws some inspiration from Maserati GranTurismo MC Stradale at least the angular tail lights. The rear section has been left clean and tidy without any unnecessary lines. The twin exhausts combined with the muscular mesh under the rear bumper look very rugged. So why do I call is the “Snob Appeal” review? When it comes to design, people get impressed with characteristic features. The violent aggression of the 3 series shouts about its character while the relaxed stance and flowing lines of the C class speak about its elegance. Contrary to this is the Audi A4 which has a real snob appeal. The A4 makes sure you like her for sure without it taking any efforts to impress you.
Audi A4 Interior & Space
The interior is where the A4 received a lot more changes. The sedan’s cabin was rather dated compared to what its competitors had to offer, especially the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, and Audi made sure it got the attention it deserved. Even though the overall layout is still somewhat classic for an Audi, the dash and the center stack are cleaner to look at. The most obvious addition is the new 8.3-inch color display, now positioned atop the dashboard. The infotainment controls are closer to the center console.
“Even though the overall layout is still somewhat classic for an Audi, the dash and the center stack are cleaner to look at.” The steering wheel is also new, seemingly based on that of the 2014 Audi Prologue Concept’s. The same goes for the MMI controls. The shifter, on the other hand, is more similar to the A8’s. Audi revamped the door panels too, giving them a more upscale look. The controls are now positioned lower on the handle, which should make them easier to use while driving. The aluminum inserts here improve the sedan’s premium feel. The continuous air vent strip on the dashboard makes the cabin seem wider.
The slightly bigger body dimensions and the redesigned interior features enable the new A4 to deliver enhanced roominess. In fact, Audi says it has the “…longest interior and greatest shoulder width at the front compared with competitors.”
It also has new colors and materials, standard LED lighting, lightweight seats, and a new interface for the automatic climate control. The new MMI system includes navigation, touch capability, LTE connectivity, WiFi, and free-text search function. A head-up display and the Audi virtual cockpit feature are available as options, as is the LED interior package with color-adjustable lighting. There’s also an optional Bang & Olufsen sound system and Audi tablet as mobile rear-seat entertainment. For more info on Audi A4 visit Icadl2013
Audi A4 Engine & Transmission
The 2017 Audi A4 diesel comes fitted with a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder TDI diesel engine. The power it generates is 190bhp and it has a torque of 400Nm. This engine is mated to a seven-speed S-Tronic automatic transmission. It takes about 7.7 seconds to reach 0-100 km/h from 0. The A4 diesel is a very torquey unit. I experienced a lot of torque steer as well, when pushed hard. The NVH levels are excellent and at par with what one would expect from a car of this class. The A4 gets the Audi Drive Select which has four modes. These are Comfort, Auto, Dynamic and Individual.
New Audi A4 Diesel EngineThe 2017 Audi A4 is also offered with a 1.4-litre TFSI petrol engine. This engine churns out about 150bhp of power and is offered with a seven-speed S-Tronic transmission. The A3 is offered with a 1.8-litre despite a smaller body. But, with a reduction of weight by about 95 kilograms, this much power is sufficient. Especially for those who are chauffeur driven. Audi has played its weight reduction card very well. The smaller engine doesn’t affect the performance that much. Also, now there is the DSG on the 2017 Audi A4 instead of CVT on the previous sedan. This also makes up way for it.
Audi A4 Ride & Handling
The Audi A4 has a very good ride and the suspension soaks up bumps with ease. There is no stiffness and the sedan remains fairly composed most of the times. The suspension also feels very silent and there are no unnecessary thuds on sharp undulations too. Talking about the steering, it is direct and precise but lacks feel and even though it provides safe and predictable handling, it just lacks the involvement that rivals in the same segment provide. You can better the steering feel by switching to Dynamic mode which stiffens the wheel. The suspension remains the same in all the modes though. The tyres have excellent grip and even the stopping power is very good.
Audi A4 Safety & Security
The A4 received five stars from Euro NCAP for its ability to protect occupants in an accident. Study the results in more detail, though, and you’ll see the Audi scored slightly lower marks than the Jaguar XE for protecting adults and pedestrians, but did a better job of keeping children safe.
All versions come with city emergency braking as standard to help prevent low-speed shunts, and if you choose you add the Driving Assistance Pack you’ll get lots more preemptive safety features, including automatic braking at higher speeds, road sign recognition and lane-keep assist.
The A4 comes with six airbags as standard, although you can choose to add rear side airbag, and we’d advise doing so if you plan to carry rear passengers on a regular basis.
